MY GROWTH STRATEGY: When working with clients, I want what they want from their company and I will do whatever I can to help them achieve it. I am more than their accountant, I am a trusted advisor.
WHAT DRIVES ME: I focus on construction contractors and not for profit (NFP) organizations. I grew up around construction contractors and it helps me connect with people in that field. For the NFP organizations, I’ve volunteered most of my life and enjoy helping organizations achieve their mission.
BEST QUESTION: When a client asks me “How can I grow my business?” and they involve me in the plan to grow. It’s an exciting process but seeing the positive results a few years later is my favorite thing about helping client grow their business.
CLIENT SUCCESSES: I worked with a second-generation, family-owned business who wanted to grow their business and maybe sell in five to ten years. Less than 10 years later, they had a potential buyer and wanted me involved in every step of the process. In the end, the shareholders got what they wanted. The youngest family member received a long-term contract to stay and work for the successor company and the other family members who wanted to retire were able to transition out of the business and comfortably retire.
PROVEN TRACK RECORD: I’ve helped my clients grow their businesses. Some of them were looking to sell for a certain price and were successful and some were looking to expand their sales area and reached their goals. At AGP, we know your industry and the unique reporting requirements and tax issues involved. We’ve been able to retroactively save clients tens of thousand of dollars in tax credits of which they were unaware. We have also prepared proper financials for their industry to help them get the bonding or financing to help them grow.
WHEN I’M NOT AT WORK: I like to spend time with my family. I have two boys who are involved in sports year round with baseball, basketball, cross country, football and soccer. I help coach baseball, basketball and football. We have season tickets to The University of Akron Zips basketball and my wife and kids also have season passes to Cedar Point.
ON MY BUCKET LIST: One of the most exciting items was carrying the Olympic Torch which I did in 2002. I still want to go to a baseball game at every stadium; attend the Olympics; and vacation in Australia.
What are some areas often overlooked by businesses? Clients in the construction industry need working capital in order to survive. Without it, they cannot get bonding and will have trouble getting or keeping a line of credit. Working with contractors on long-term planning helps with this issue.
What are the pressing issues facing businesses right now? Most of my clients want to grow, make money and not pay too much in taxes. I help our clients look at their internal processes and see where improvements can be made. AGP has the knowledge to take advantage of tax credits and other tax saving ideas.
